Brett Price KM6VFW-SK

We are saddened to report that CVARC President Brett Price-KM6VFW passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 9, 2021.  Brett just celebrated his 71st birthday on May 2nd.

He is survived by two sons, Andrew and Kevin and a fiancee, Shirlee Huffman. There will be a small family service in the future in the Lake Tahoe area where Brett had requested his ashes be scattered, near those of his father.

Brett spent four decades working as an attorney. He has represented governmental entities, public and private companies, and individuals in the areas of property tax law and civil litigation, commercial and business law, oil and gas law, energy resource law, construction law, real estate and bankruptcy matters.

Brett was in his second term as CVARC President.  His commitment to the club and efforts in advancing amateur radio will be greatly missed.

CVARC Member Aids Sheriff in Finding Missing Hiker

A 45-year-old hiker who was reported missing after he texted a friend that he was lost in Angeles National Forest has been found. Ham radio operator and satellite mapping enthusiast Benjamin Kuo, working from a cell phone photograph, helped authorities pinpoint the hiker’s location. View this interesting Twitter thread in which Ben explains how he managed to geolocate the hiker using only the general area and a grainy photograph.

Amateur Radio Gets a Partial Reprieve on 3.5 GHz

Pending future FCC action, amateur radio secondary use of the 3.3 -3.45 GHz band segment may continue indefinitely. The FCC decided that “continued access by amateur radio to 3.3 – 3.45 GHz should be allowed while it analyzes whether that spectrum can be reallocated for commercial wireless use.”

The FCC action represents a partial “and temporary” reprieve from the FCC’s December 2019 proposal to remove amateur radio from the entire band, and it makes available an additional 50 Megahertz than an FCC proposal last fall to allow amateur temporary use of 3.3 – 3.4 GHz.

Bored in Quarantine

Zak Cohen-N6PK It’s all because this ham didn’t want to be bored!

Last March, Ventura County went into lock down due to the COVID-19 crisis. Like everywhere else, this was quite a shock to us. One thing sets hams apart from the general public is we know how to stay in touch with each other. So, Starting March 21st, Zak Cohen-N6PK started a check in net on our local 2M repeater. Not once per week, not once per day-but four times per day, at 0900, 1200, 1800, and 2100. People checked in in droves-obviously, we all felt the need to have some sort of contact while facing the prospect of what we thought would be a few weeks confined to our homes.

2021 Dayton Hamvention Cancelled

Citing “several setbacks in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Dayton Hamvention Executive Committee has announced the cancellation of the 2021 event, scheduled for mid-May. The announcement cited the slower-than-expected rollout of the COVID vaccine as well as the even-more contagious variant that has emerged in recent weeks.

This is the second consecutive year in which the pandemic has forced cancellation of the world’s largest hamfest. The committee says tickets that were deferred from last year will be deferred again, and that plans are in the works for another on-air Hamvention QSO Party on what would have been the Hamvention weekend.

Reinhardt is 2020 Bosma Award Recipient

Jeff Reinhardt-AA6JR is the 2020 recipient of the Hugh Bosma Legacy Award. CVARC President Brett Price-KM6VFW presented the award at the CVARC general meeting November 19, 2020. Reinhardt was recognized for his 20 years of service as CVARC’s Volunteer Examiner Coordinator. Jeff’s VE program has tested 2,150 candidates who have earned 1,655 amateur radio licenses since 1990.
