President’s Message

Hello CVARC members, families, and guests!

Ed Zimmermann-N6XEW

Where has 2022 gone!  I cannot believe how quickly 2023 is coming at us. And with that we have the CVARC Holiday Party on December 15th. The event will begin at 6:00 P.M. at the Best Western Posada Royale, 1775 Madera Road, Simi Valley. It’s a time to meet and socialize with other members and enjoy some great food. There will be a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings as well prime rib, and of course desert.  As I understand, you can go back for seconds! We encourage you to attend. Tickets are $30 per person.  As Zak Cohen-N6PK is so very fond of saying, “we need more people!” Reserve your seats now with Zak at n6pk@cvarc.org. There will be two raffles conducted at the party.

The “Big Raffle” is for a $300 DX Engineering gift certificate. Tickets are $10 each or “best value,” three for $25!  You do not need to be present at the party to win the “Big Raffle.” There will be a second raffle at the party.  If you purchased raffle tickets at any of the monthly CVARC General Meetings are automatically entered into this raffle for a $100 DX Engineering gift certificate.  Unlike the “Big Raffle,” you must be present at the Holiday Party to win. You can sign up and pay for Holiday Party and “Big Raffle” tickets at our next two General Meetings, October 20 and November 17th.

On Sunday, November 6th, we will all be turning our clocks back one hour.  Hey, it’s an additional hour to work DX!  It’s also a great time to check the batteries in go bags and smoke detectors, replenish emergency food/water rations and change the filters in our AC/heating systems. I have a check list of items that need my attention.

Coming up at our November General Meeting we will be electing our 2023 Board of Directors please plan on attending.  It’s not too late to put your name in for a board position.

At our September 15th CVARC General Meeting,  ARRL Santa Barbara Section Emergency Coordinator Rick Tate-KQ6NO demonstrated the Elecraft K-4. Thank you, Rick, for giving us all a taste of an amazing transceiver!

Our next meeting is Thursday October 20th with a very timely topic.  If you have been playing around with HF the past few weeks, you might have noticed that 10 meters is on fire. The topic:  Update on the progress of Solar Cycle 25.  Solar Cycle 25 is anticipated to peak with solar maximum occurring between 2023 and 2026. Ken Larson-KJ6RZ discusses where we are in the current solar cycle, implications of what appears to be happening, and what we can expect going forward.  It’s an excellent time to consider upgrading to General or Extra to take full advantage of the solar maximum and the amazing propagation that comes with it.  Exciting times are ahead.

Newbie Net:  Our Newbie Net meets every Sunday night at 7 P.M. The Newbie Net is an opportunity for newer hams to get on the air and gain experience and confidence. More experienced hams or “Elmers” regularly check in and are available to answer questions and offer advice.  All are welcome.  We are always looking for net controllers. #hamharder.  It is great practice and fun to be net control, so please sign up with Todd-KD6RCM at kd6rcm@arrl.net.

Hope to hear you on the air!

73,

Ed-N6XEW
