        CVARC January 10, 2002 Program

Mark your calendars.....

I'm happy to report that Paul Raab, KF6CM, member of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department's Search and Rescue Team will be our speaker at  the CVARC January 10, 2002, meeting.  He will bring the Search and Rescue  van and equipment, and his presentation will include a video of Search and Rescue activities.

New Amateur Radio Classes

It appears at this time that the next regular Amateur Radio course for the Technician Class license will start on Tuesday January 14th and will run for ten weeks through March 18th.   These classes will run from 7:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. each Tuesday evening at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 3645 Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks, California.  This location is one block East of Olson Road on Moorpark Road.  Karl Moody, KE6WVZ will continue to teach these classes.

The cost of this class will remain as it has in the past at $20.00 which covers the cost of the study manual "Now You're Talking" and all necessary classroom materials.  For those unable to attend the Tuesday evening classes, we have a home study program that is self-paced with assistance from the class instructor as needed on Tuesday evenings after 8:45 p.m.     Those using the home study program will be allowed to check out the ARRL Video Tape series as available, and will be provided any available computer programs available to assist their studies.

Any club members who wish to volunteer to work as "mentors" with any of our home study students should contact Karl Moody and let him know of their availability and how much time they can give to the educational programs of CVARC.  Karl is putting together for future consideration an on-line class program which will allow students to receive study assignments by email, to contact class instructors and/or mentors over the internet, and to make more use of the internet and computer systems to augment the classroom studies programs for those unable to attend class meetings.

Club members with ideas on how we can structure a study program in an internet environment should contact Karl and help with this project.  It is felt that there is a great deal that could be done in a computer/internet studies program if we have those with computer and internet skills and knowledge volunteer to assist us in developing such programs.   Without help from members with such skills and experience this is not likely to happen.  Karl would like to make the club's educational programs available to those unable to attend classes or to learn in a time structured program. We know there are those with the interest who have computers at home, have access to the internet and who would like to study Amateur Radio over the internet much like the ARRL Certification Program.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.  In the meantime we will just keep on teaching the classes the old fashioned way....in the classroom with blackboard and a teacher. It still works for most of our prospective Hams, and CVARC will continue to make this opportunity available to all who have the desire to experience the magic of radio.

Remember to tell you friends about the class starting in January. And, if any of you have old ham radio equipment; especially 2 meter radios, that is just gathering dust in the garage, we would encourage you to consider donating them to the Education Committee to help us get new hams on the air as soon as possible after they receive their license.  Older hand-held or mobile radios that are still operational with functional repeater offset operations, PL's and some memory channels will  do much more good in the hands of some young ham than they will do in your garage junk box.

Anyway,  2001 was a good year for CVARC's classes, with over 100 students taking the CVARC Amateur Radio License Class and 73 of them being licensed.  Now we need to do more as a club to introduce them to club activities and members, and to encourage them to become members of CVARC.  Any help and ideas here will also be appreciated.  Until next month...keep telling your friends and neighbors about ham radio and CVARC, and tell them how easy it is now to get their license.  Have them call Karl Moody if they want more information.
