While we can’t have a CVARC Holiday Party this year, we can celebrate the season and a most unique 2020 with the CVARC “Holiday Cheer” Zoom on Thursday, December 17th at 7:00 p.m. We’ll gather on Zoom and celebrate the past year and look forward to better days in 2021. Topic – FT-8, FT-4: Zak Cohen-N6PK looks at the origination of the digital modes FT65, FT8 and FT4 and then moves on to basic configuration and operational settings. The presentation also covers different ways to operate and leverage radio and program settings while working the bands.

Topic: RFI in the Shack: Bob Brehm-AK6R is Chief Engineer of Palomar Engineers , a company that specializes in helping hams deal with radio frequency interference. Bob will talk about the causes of RFI and how to reduce or eliminate it in your shack. Bob has been a ham for over 50 years with experience in contesting, RTTY, amplitude modulation, vintage radio restoration, boat anchors, linear amps and unique antennas.

“Did You Feel It? (DFYI)” is a collaboration between the USGS and amateur radio operators intended to use the skills and capabilities of hams to get messages regarding the intensity of earthquakes out to first responders. The DYFI event will be held on Saturday October 17th as part of the “Great California ShakeOut 2020” CVARC members wishing to participate in the event are invited to three preparation meetings to be held on Zoom:

Operators hiked to local hilltops or worked the VHF bands from home shacks, cars and even bicycles for the CVARC “Virtual Picnic” Sprint on Saturday August 29, 2020. Sprint organizer Keith Elliiot-W6KME said 24 operators reported scores. A remarkable total of 455 QSOs were made during the three-hour VHF contest.

Topic- Ham Radio on the International Space Station: NASA astronaut Doug “Wheels” Wheelock-KF5BOC is a veteran of Space Shuttle mission STS-120 as well as ISS Expedition 24, and was Commander of Expedition 25. During this mission, Wheelock conducted three unplanned spacewalks to replace a faulty ammonia pump module. He was selected to be an astronaut by NASA in 1998. The retired U.S. Army Colonel has accumulated more than 178 days in space.

The Conejo Valley Amateur Radio Club is hosting remote General (Level 2) License classes consisting of 5 weekly sessions.
The classes will use the Zoom video conferencing software. Download it free here: https://zoom.us/. Practice setting up a meeting (also free) and get familiar with the software BEFORE the classes start. You will also need a computer with video camera and microphone either built-in or attached.
Class dates: Saturday September 19, 26, October 3, 10 and 17
Class time: 8:00 am – Noon
