June Club Meeting

The next regular club meeting will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. at the East County Sheriff’s Station.

Topic: Mesh Networks – Orv Beach-W6BI will discuss ham radio networking or “mesh” networking, one of the fastest growing activities in amateur radio. The Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) Mesh Network Project is a very large, long-range WiFi-type network system for licensed amateur radio operators and can operate on amateur radio frequencies.

President’s Message

Hello CVARC members, families, and guests!

June is here and another very busy month is ahead for amateur radio in Ventura County. We had the Love Run this past Sunday. Coming up is the CVARC VE session on the 11^th. And let’s not forget that Field Day preparations are well under way. Field Day setup starts on Friday June 23^rd at noon. Field Day operating hours begin on Saturday June 24^th at 11 A.M. and continue to Sunday June 25^th at 11 A.M. After that, we break everything down, pack up, and clean up the field.

2023 CVARC ARRL Field Day

CVARC’s Field Day returns for a third years at the Sherwood Development Company’s field, aka “Dicken’s Patch.” The site is located at 373 West Potrero Road, Westlake Village. The event runs from Saturday June 24 at 11:00 A.M. to Sunday June 25th at 11:00 A.M. Setup begins at noon on Friday June 23rd.

Field Day Weekly Meetings

Field Day is around the corner, and we’re having a weekly Zoom meeting to prepare, Wednesdays at 8:00 P.M. Anyone planning to take part in CVARC’s 2023 Field Day in Hidden Valley is invited. May Club Meeting

The next regular club meeting will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. at the East County Sheriff’s Station.

Topic – Field Day 2023: CVARC Field Day Chair Keith Elliott-W6KME outlines the plans for the club’s Field Day on June 24-25. On Field Day, CVARC members join more than 40,000 hams throughout North America in setting up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation.

April Club Meeting

Topic: The Evolution of CW: Norm Campbell-AB6ET looks at how wired telegraphic electromagnetism evolved into wireless electromagnetic CW radio waves. Norm details the short history of this “almost instant” communication and what it did for us as a country and later as hobbyists.

March Club Meeting

Topic: Designing and Assembling Amateur Satellites: Abigail Outcalt-KN6SOT and Cole Fehring-KN0TCF of the Cal Poly CubeSat Laboratory talk about miniature satellites that have been used in low Earth orbit for many applications including communications.

February Club Meeting

Topic: DXpedition: Paul Ewing-N6PSE is the founder of the Intrepid DX Group and has organized and participated in eight DXpeditions to very rare DX and exotic locations around the world, including Northern Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen. Paul will discuss his visit to North Korea and how he got and lost permission for a DXpedition.

January Club Meeting

The next regular club meeting will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. at the East County Sheriff’s Station.

Topic: James Webb Space Telescope: Most of us are enjoying the spectacular images coming from the new James Webb Space Telescope. CVARC member Gary Bostrup-KM6DMM has been involved with the landmark project, working on the sensors that are collecting those precious photons. Gary will be talking about how those amazing images are created and how radio is used to control the spacecraft and send data back to earth.

November Club Meeting

The next regular club meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at 7:30 P.M. at the East County Sheriff’s Station.

Topic: Parachute Mobile – When was the last time you worked 146.520 from 14,500 feet? How about while floating down to earth under a parachute? We’ll meet Carlos Felix-KD9OLN who takes his radio on jumps and has made 2m, 10m, and 20m contacts on the way down.
