Topic: RFI in the Shack: Bob Brehm-AK6R is Chief Engineer of Palomar Engineers , a company that specializes in helping hams deal with radio frequency interference. Bob will talk about the causes of RFI and how to reduce or eliminate it in your shack.  Bob has been a ham for over 50 years with experience in contesting, RTTY, amplitude modulation, vintage radio restoration, boat anchors, linear amps and unique antennas.

September Club Meeting Information

Topic- Ham Radio on the International Space Station: NASA astronaut Doug “Wheels” Wheelock-KF5BOC is a veteran of Space Shuttle mission STS-120 as well as ISS Expedition 24, and was Commander of Expedition 25. During this mission, Wheelock conducted three unplanned spacewalks to replace a faulty ammonia pump module. He was selected to be an astronaut by NASA in 1998. The retired U.S. Army Colonel has accumulated more than 178 days in space.

Topic/Guest SpeakerDeep Space Communications and the Deep Space Network: Stephen Townes-WB4ILW will the Deep Space Network, an international array of giant radio antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions.  He will also give us an overview of the fundamentals of deep space communications and aspects of flight hardware. Dr. Townes is the Chief Technologist of the Interplanetary Network Directorate and Manager of the Technology, Standards and Spectrum Program Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is the current President of the JPL Amateur Radio Club.

Due to the anticipated restrictions on large gatherings, Field Day (June 27-28) will transition from a group activity into individual station events. Martin will discuss the Field Day rules and operating options for individual stations. He’ll also share some of the ideas planned for, albeit distant, social interaction to keep us connected as a club on Field Day weekend.

Topic/Guest Speakers – Amateur Radio on the International Space Station: Norm Thorn -K6UU discusses ARISS, a competitive program for schools to propose special science and space education programs in conjunction with contacting an astronaut aboard the International Space Station via amateur radio.  Most ARISS events worldwide lately have been postponed indefinitely, due to social distancing requirements and stay at home orders.  Norm will discuss efforts to develop working online approaches to doing events even if the students are at home in quarantine.  He will touch on some of the things they are looking at to deal with the situation.

March 19th CVARC Meeting Cancelled

In an abundance of caution over being able to provide a safe meeting environment for our members, we have decided to cancel the March 19, 2020 CVARC meeting.  We hope to reschedule the program for later in the year.  The CVARC Board of Directors will consider the advice and direction of county, state and federal health experts on COVID-19 and make decisions about the rest of the club meetings going forward.  Please look for updated information on this website, on our newsgroup at groups.io and on the CVARC Facebook page. February Club Meeting Information

The next regular club meeting is Thursday, February 20, 2020 (always the third Thursday) at the East County Sheriff’s Station’s Community Room, 2101 E. Olsen Rd, Thousand Oaks at 7:30 pm. Talk-in coordination is on the Bozo repeater, 147.885 (- 127.3)

Topic/Guest Speakers – Solar Cycle:  Ken Larsen – KJ6RZ discusses sunspots which have a profound effect on HF radio communications.  HF communications are excellent during solar maximum (lots of sunspots), but not so great during solar minimum when few if any sunspots are visible.  Why is this?  Why do the number of sunspots follow an 11-year cycle?  What are the predictions for the upcoming solar cycle?
