May Club Meeting

The next regular club meeting will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. at the East County Sheriff’s Station.

Topic – Field Day 2023: CVARC Field Day Chair Keith Elliott-W6KME outlines the plans for the club’s Field Day on June 24-25. On Field Day, CVARC members join more than 40,000 hams throughout North America in setting up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation.

Local Hams Visit Visalia DX Convention

David Arata-KA9WMI and Casey Cryer-KJ6GCV attended the 74th International DX Convention April 21-23 in Visalia. They enjoyed a number of events including the Contest Forum and the DX Forum and enjoyed looking at the latest ham radio equipment in the exhibit hall.

Spring Fling Rover Roundup Results

CVARC’s annual Spring Fling-Rover Roundup returned on Saturday, April 15th. The fun event featured a contest on 2-meter simplex where participants tried to make as many contacts as they could from local grid squares.

The top six finishers were:

President’s Message

Hello CVARC members, families, and guests!

It’s April and you know what that means, ARRL Field Day 2023 is three months away.
That means is time to start getting your gear in order, testing setups, batteries, radios, computers, and antennas. June 24^th will be here before you know it!

The CVARC General meeting is Thursday April 20^th at 7:30 P.M. The topic: The Evolution of CW. Our very own Norm Campbell-AB6ET looks at how wired telegraphic electromagnetism evolved into wireless electromagnetic CW radio waves.

April Club Meeting

Topic: The Evolution of CW: Norm Campbell-AB6ET looks at how wired telegraphic electromagnetism evolved into wireless electromagnetic CW radio waves. Norm details the short history of this “almost instant” communication and what it did for us as a country and later as hobbyists.

Visit to a German Ham Radio Club

I visited the city of Mainz, Germany last summer and wanted to share my wonderful experience with everyone in the club. While in Mainz, I met a local ham, Rudolf “Rudi” Klos-DK7PE. Rudi is a professional communications engineer with Lufthansa Airlines. He is an avid traveler and DX-er and uses his company sponsored travel to visit many countries. Rudi has been with the local radio club for over 50 years. Like so many CVARC hams, he started with an interest at a young age and was fascinated with being able to communicate with others all over the world.

The local ham club, which is very similar to the CVARC, had a ham booth at the “Rheinland Pflaz-Tag.” This is a yearly festival in the region complete with satellite links and digital mode demonstrations! The local ham club also invited me to their weekend restaurant event. It was great to talk to the other local hams about their interests and activities.

President’s Message

Hello CVARC members, families, and guests!

What at crazy February we all had. Rain, wind and snow! Make sure to keep your batteries charged and stations in peak operational condition. Daylight saving time starts March 12^th. It is a great time to check batteries, smoke detectors, refresh go bags, check dates on your emergency food/water, and change the AC/heater filters.

Results of the February 12 VE Session

CVARC held a VE session on February 12th. There were six candidates and six new licenses or upgrades were earned; three Technician, two General, and one Extra. Those who earned new licenses or upgrades at the session were:

March Club Meeting

Topic: Designing and Assembling Amateur Satellites: Abigail Outcalt-KN6SOT and Cole Fehring-KN0TCF of the Cal Poly CubeSat Laboratory talk about miniature satellites that have been used in low Earth orbit for many applications including communications.

President’s Message

Hello CVARC members, families, and guests!

January 2023 is in the books. Boy, it sure flew by. And February is half over. The Ides of March are almost upon us. Be sure to get on the air February 15^th thru February 21^st as some of our club members will be on the air as W1AW/6. The CVARC Winter Field Day was held on Saturday January 28^th at Dos Vientos Park. The event was amazing. Ron Topolinski-K6CPR had his 5-year-old grandson pounding his name in CW and sending 73! The Acorn showed up and snapped a few pictures. Thank you to our public relations board member April Taylor-KN6QQW.

The CVARC general meeting is Thursday, February 16^th at 7:30 P.M. Topic: DXpedition: Paul Ewing-N6PSE is the founder of the Intrepid DX Group and has organized and participated in eight DXpeditions to very rare DX and exotic locations around the world, including Northern Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen. Paul will discuss his visit to North Korea and how he got and lost permission for a DXpedition.
