Special Event Station: National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day

On Saturday, May 15, 2021, Ron Nelson-K6RIN will be staffing a special event station (WA6LE) at the Simi Valley Police Department to commemorate the annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and National Police Week.

Peace Officers Memorial Day came into effect on October 1, 1962, when President John Kennedy, at Congress’ request, signed a bill designating May 15 as a special day to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives while protecting their communities.  Each year, the president of the United States proclaims May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week of each year leading up to May 15 as National Police Week.  Several law enforcement agencies in Ventura County hold annual ceremonies commemorating and remembering several Ventura County peace officers who have lost their lives while protecting their communities.

The Special Event Station will be hosted by the SOTA Leos Amateur Radio Club (WA6LE), a club made up of active and retired officers from various local and federal agencies.  The station will operate from approximately 0700 to 1500 on Saturday, May 15, 2021.  QSL Cards will be available for those who complete QSO’s with the special event station and express an interest by mailing a self-addressed/stamped envelope. For more information, contact Ron Nelson at K6RIN@arrl.net.
